About Smith and Kraus

Smith and Kraus Publishers, founded in 1990 by Marisa Smith and Eric Kraus, is the premier U. S. publisher of contemporary trade theater books and associated digital resources. Currently S&K boasts over 600 titles in print, a sophisticated monologue app with 4000+ entries (more added monthly), and a plan to complete the conversion of all print books to e-book format and be on all major e-book platforms by year’s end. New projects well under way, include Productions In Print (PIP) and Playwrights In An Hour (PIAH). Negotiations are underway for S&K to partner with Kanjy, a forward looking, interactive platform, designed to facilitate communication between playwrights, producers and other interested parties.

We are the leading source for books about theater—from collections of monologues and scenes for use in class or at auditions, to contemporary and classic play collections, to acting technique and career resource titles. In addition, we have a substantial list of books for children and teachers.

Beyond publishing the works of contemporary new playwrights like Theresa Rebeck and Christopher Durang, Smith and Kraus has released the definitive translations of plays by the old masters, like Sophocles, Anton Chekhov, August Strindberg, and many others.

In the past few years Smith has launched two unique series. The first is Playwrights In an Hour, a collection of 33 books. These informative little books, written by experts in their fields, are under 100 pages and connect the histories, societies,

and biographies of 33 playwrights to their plays. They take no more than one hour to read! The Los Angeles Times called Playwrights In an Hour, “Red Bull for theater buffs.” At only $10 per book, Playwrights In an Hour is ideal for actors, directors, theatergoers, educators, and students (wholesale prices available).

The second series is our PIP series: Productions in Print. A Production in Print is a production of a play as a book. Each book includes a brief biography of the playwright, a concise chronology corresponding to the playwright’s life, images from the production and, the centerpiece of the book, the production’s script. If you’re producing a new play, this is a great way to have it published! Regular participating theaters in our PIP series include: Playwright Horizons, The Roundabout, The McCarter Theater, the Shakespeare Theatre Company of Washington D.C. and many others. But you don’t have to be a theater to have a PIP. If you are a playwright you can have your play published and available for sale during your production or have copies made after the production to use for promotional and marketing purposes. As of this writing, May of 2014, we have over 60 titles in our PIP program.

S&K publishes books that enrich the theater experience for theatre students, theater professionals, and theater audiences. S&K’s work is a win, win, win for revitalizing America theater.
