A little History about our signature Smith and Kraus Stage Monologue Series.
Smith & Kraus started the Annual Stage Monologue Series in 1990, the year that we started publishing. In fact, the Best Men’s and Best Women’s Stage Monologues of 1990 were the first titles that Smith and Kraus published. It’s hard to believe that back in 1990 there were only a handful of stage monologue books for actors, and most of them were published as small staple bound volumes. And at the time, there were no collections of monologues from plays produced that season or the previous one. In 2011 We added the Best 10 Minute Play books to our annual series.

These scripts have the ability to wrench your heart or make you laugh uncontrollably. There are holiday plays, wicked plays, dystopian plays, political plays, comedies, dramas, and of course, love stories. But the best thing about this group of plays is the writers here have created dynamic scripts full of diverse characters and challenging situations. These are great pieces to read, act in, and hopefully produce!
Here in this book you will find 70 very diverse monologues written for women. These pieces present great acting challenges, and actors will have the pleasure of sinking their teeth into this sublime material while continuing to perfect their craft in their online or in-person workshops. The monologues all come from plays. Read these pieces, act these pieces. They will seem familiar to you as you hold the mirror up to nature and realize that art is indeed life.

This book will remain important long after any of us put it down from our reading. Why? It’s a pioneer. It’s one of the first of its kind. It is a resource for the acting community, a handbook for the directing community, a place to find material so there’s real representation on our stages and a guide for all of us to begin a long overdue conversation about our beautifully unique differences.
Embrace your feisty side and thrive in your fifties! ‘Feisty Over Fifty’ is your guide to a vibrant, fulfilling life as you navigate the exciting challenges and opportunities that come with this empowering decade.
2020 was not a great year for a variety of reasons, particularly because of Covid-19. This book includes forty-five short plays that show the lighter side of quarantine, lockdown, and social distancing. The virus is nothing to laugh at, but these plays provide a bit of levity in these unprecedented and stressful times. Laughter, after all, is the best medicine.
